Li edges French teen in Roland Garros first round

Chinese number one Li Na advanced to the French Open second round after edging French 17-year-old Kristina Mladenovic 7-5, 6-3 on Court Suzanne Lenglen here on Monday.
Mladenovic, the reigning junior champion and the youngest player in the draw, held her own throughout a competitive match but world number 12 Li eventually prevailed in one hour and 39 minutes.
Li, who reached the Australian Open semi-finals earlier this year, will face either Canada's Stephanie Dubois or Frenchwoman Stephanie Cohen-Aloro in the next round.

Hewitt returns to down Isner at World Team Cup

Germany (AFP) – Lleyton Hewitt of Australia needed barely an hour to prove his hip injury is behind him as he defeated John Isner of the United States here at the World Team Cup.
The former Wimbledon and US Open champion saw off Isner 6-2, 6-4 in just 66 minutes and was rarely troubled by the American in the red group clash and looks in good form for Roland Garros at the end of this month.

Roger Federer shrugged off his Madrid Masters final defeat against Rafael Nadal and insisted it's all to play for at the French Open where he is the defending champion.

"The claycourt season will not be judged here, but in Paris," said the world number one after his 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) loss to his great Spanish rival in Sunday's final.

Henin could meet Sharapova in 3rd, Serena in QF

Welcome back, Justine. Your first French Open since 2007 could be quite a challenge.
Thanks to Friday's draw, four-time champion Justine Henin's return to Roland Garros might include a third-round match against Maria Sharapova and a rivalry-renewing quarterfinal against Serena Williams.
The bracket also sets up the No. 1-seeded Williams, who won the 2002 French Open, to face No. 4 Jelena Jankovic in the semifinals. Williams' older sister, No. 2 Venus, could meet No. 5 Elena Dementieva in the quarterfinals and defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the semifinals.

Rafael Nadal sauntered through a hotel lobby in the centre of town on Thursday, a bounce in his step and a black watch worth more than US$400,000 strapped to his left wrist.

The gait is noteworthy because Nadal's much-scrutinized knees are doing quite well — they "are in a very good moment," is the way he put it. The timepiece, crafted by luxury watchmaker Richard Mille with Nadal's input, is noteworthy because he plans to wear it while playing at the French Open.

Mayer, Verdasco reach semis at Open de Nice

Leonardo Mayer of Argentina beat fifth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in the Open de Nice quarterfinals on Thursday.

In his second career semifinals, the 59th-ranked Mayer will meet second-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain, who struggled to beat Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-4.

His knees better, Nadal eyes a 5th French title

Serena Williams set for French Open bid

Serena Williams rates Paris as her favourite city and that sentiment will be all the stronger should she win a second French Open title, eight years after her first.
On the face of it, the American diva is facing an uphill battle as she has played just two tournaments since winning the Australian Open in January, losing to Jelena Jankovic in Rome and Nadia Petrova in Madrid.
But the signs are there that she is out to re-establish her claycourt credentials with several factors whetting her appetite.
